The FIFA World Cup 2026 will mark a historic expansion from 32 to 48 teams, the biggest format change since the tournament grew to 32 nations in 1998.

New structure: - 12 groups of 4 teams (previously 8 groups of 4) - Top 2 from each group advance (24 teams) - 8 best third-place teams also progress to the round of 32 - Total of 104 matches (up from 64)

This expansion gives more nations a chance to compete on the world stage. UEFA will have 16 slots, CAF 9, AFC 8, CONCACAF 6, CONMEBOL 6, and Oceania 1. Two additional spots will be determined through inter-confederation play-offs.

The group stage promises more diversity and underdog stories, while the knockout rounds maintain the same drama and intensity fans expect.
